History
The USS Monarchy NCC-75234 is the third in a line of starships to bear the name, and a member of the Federation's most advanced starship type, the Sovereign-class.
Construction on hull 75234 began in early 2369. As design problems in the Sovereign prototype were realized, as was the ever-present threat of another Borg incurrsion as well as increased diplomatic pressures with the Cardassian Union,
Starfleet called for more conventional technology to be used to fleshout the Sovereign-class and to get them fielded as soon as possible.
Hull 75234 was initially deployed in June of 2372, but recalled a month later to complete a total overhaul of her armor plating, computer core technology, shielding and warp propulsion systems. These advances, which took the rest of the year to fully integrate, were thanks in part to smaller, more focused programs such as Project Defiant and Project Prometheus. As losses from the the Dominion were increasing, the need for more and more capable starships were going out to all Fleetyards; there were few ships in the Starfleet inventory that were more capable than the Sovereign-class to participate in combat duty.
Christened USS Monarchy, the starship left Utopia Planitia fully assembled on her maiden voyage in 2373 to the planet Betazed, where it participated in the fateful and hasty evacuation of Starfleet personnel there. In the battle that followed, the USS Monarchy assisted nine other Federation starships in protecting the withdrawing freighters and hospital ships as the Dominion launched their initial assault on the planet. The Monarchy was one of five vessels that were part of the screen that survived the encounter, and as a result of the battle would spend the next two months at Starbase 76 undergoing repairs and rearmament. The USS Monarchy would return to Betazed in 2377, this time as part of the honor guard escorting the newly commissioned USS Cairo, an Akira-class vessel named for one of the vessels that was destroyed during the withdrawl from Betazed.
By mid 2373, the Monarchy was fully engaged in the Dominion War. Participating in everything from convoy duty, escorting supply vessels working toward the assault on the Chin'Toka system, to war patrol where she was responsible for the destruction of 10 Dominion Skirmish ships, the Monarchy illustrated more than once that the Sovereign-class, initially considered a bust by some in Starfleet Command, was more than capable as a warship and as a fleet defense ship. Nominally part of the 5th Fleet, the Monarchy was assigned as the Flagship of that Fleet late in 2373, as the 5th began to be reconstituted and the war draw to a close. She would serve as the flagship of the 5th Fleet until 2380.
During the summer of 2380, the Monarchy was ordered home to Earth, where the war-weary crew was rotated to less strenuous posts throughout Starfleet and the Monarchy was assigned to the newly reformed 1st Fleet. The 1st Fleet's mission, return to active exploration missions that has always been Starfleet's primary objective, and the Monarchy being the first vessel of five vessels to depart on a 5 year exploration mission.

Lineage
To date, three Federation starships have born the name Monarchy over a period of nearly 100 years. Named for a method of government that, in one form or another, is universally recognized Federation-wide, the most recent ship of the line is a Sovereign-class starship launched in 2372.
A monarchy, from the Greek monos arkhein (meaning: one ruler), is a form of government that has a monarch as Head of State. The distinguishing characteristic of monarchies is that the Head of State holds his office for life, unlike in republics, where presidents are generally elected for a certain amount of time. The term monarchy is also used to refer to the people and institutions that make up the royal establishment, or to the realm in which the monarchy functions.
Elective monarchies, distinguished by the monarchs being appointed for life, have in most cases been succeeded by hereditary monarchies; in which the position of monarch involves inheritance according to an order of succession, usually within one royal family tracing its origin back to a historical dynasty or bloodline. In some cases the royal family may claim to hold authority by virtue of God's choosing, or other religious-based authority.
In most countries with monarchies, the monarch serves as a symbol of continuity and statehood. Many states have a strong convention against the monarch becoming involved in partisan politics. In some cases, the symbolism of monarchy alongside the symbolism of democracy can lead to division over the apparently contradictory principles.
Monarchies are one of the oldest forms of government, with echoes in the leadership of tribal chiefs.
The first vessel to bear the name Monarchy was a Miranda-class Cruiser, launched originally on June 10, 2311, was the USS Monarchy NCC-19952. This particular ship served with quiet distinction until her decommissioning in 2337. Its final mission took place when the Monarchy participated in the evacuation of Starfleet and Federation personnel from Turkana IV, one of the last times the planet is visited until 2361 and the USS Potemkin. With the advent of isolinear technology, the Monarchy was retired and scrapped, the cost of replacement considered too high.
One of the first Centaur-class vessels to be launched by Starfleet, the second ship to bear the name Monarchy and was assigned to the 5th Fleet Alpha Task Force, a Reconassaince Force working with Beta Task Force along the Tzenkethi border and was involved with numerous skirmishes with Tzenkethi forces. The Monarchy was lost during the Federation-Tzenkethi War in 2360.
The current vessel bearing the name Monarchy is the third Sovereign-class starship to enter service, behind the USS Sovereign and USS Enterprise-E. The Monarchy has served with steadfast distinction since its launch, serving on the front lines of the Dominion War and participating in the counteroffensive push toward Cardassia Prime. Following the war, she served as the Flagship for the 4th Fleet, touring the reconstruction zones and participating in diplomatic negotations with former client states of the Cardassia Union.
She is currently under the command of Captain Maximillian Wolfe.
