History
The third starship to bear the name, the USS Endeavour NCC-89205 is the latest to hold onto a prestigious history.
The latest Endeavour was originally built with the name USS Palatine, as part of the Project: Vesta initiative by Starfleet Research & Development, Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards and Casimir Quantum-Nautics, Inc..
The Vesta-Class starship development was conceived as part of Starfleet's response to the growing Borg threat to the Federation in the 2360s and 2370s. The Vesta-Class's intent was tri-fold: expand Starfleet's exploration prospects by revisiting the feasibility of transwarp travel (and later, subspace fold technology, which would allow for exploration into regions regular Starfleet operations could not dream of achieving), provide an in-the-field modular testbed for new technologies applicable to a 25th Century "workhorse" for the Federation, and ensure a rapid-response heavy defense vessel in the event of a Borg invasion.
The experimental USS Vesta completed construction in 2372, and prepped for next-generation bio-gel computer core packs, powerful phaser pulse cannons, and a new variation of transwarp technology. However, the project was put on indefinite hiatus at the outbreak of war with The Dominion. With the conclusion of hostilities in 2375, Project: Vesta started up again with a renewed vigor. The intent was to have seven Vesta-Class starships completed by 2385 for assistance in expanding the Federation's reach, defense and understanding of the Universe.
The return of the USS Voyager in 2377 provided a new technological application amongst the other leaps in advance that occurred during The Dominion War: quantum slipstream drives.
With the rush to advance the Federation's technologies, and prepare Starfleet for a post-War Alpha Quadrant, the Vesta-Class was selected to have a variety of new untested technologies implemented. Beyond the USS Vesta itself, the [Aventine], [Equiline] and [Quirinal] were outfitted with slipstream drives by 2381.
In 2380, construction of the USS Palatine commenced at Utopia Planitia, with the intent of the vessel to handle the newest version of the slipstream drive out of Starfleet R & D upon completion in 2385. Construction of the starship was completed on time, and the vessel was given to the command of Captain Horatio Matheson, who came onboard the Palatine construction project in 2383.
In 2385, the Nebula-Class USS Endeavour NCC-71805 was destroyed during "the Colian Intercept," in which the vessel saved the lives of 15,000 colonists at the Colian IV Colony when a large asteroid with unique electro-magnetic properties approached. In its honor, the Palatine was renamed to the USS Endeavour NCC-89205.
In late 2385 and early 2386, the newly-christened Endeavour began early tests of its quantum slipstream drive. During one such test, a quantum-flux error struck the drive, resulting in the ship being "pushed out of phase" in the quantum tunnel. The engineering crew onboard managed to safely remove the vessel from the quantum stream, but in the process, Captain Horatio Matheson mysteriously vanished. The Captain was declared MIA after 3 months of intense searching and study of the Endeavour. To this day, it is unknown what exactly occurred during the quantum flux incident.
Following a year of testing, the USS Endeavour launched from Starbase 343 on stardate 90127.8 under the command of Captain S'harien Ahkileez.
