Aquatic lifeform based on Delphinius Tursiops - Bottlenose Dolphin. This species is a direct result of human eugenics research of the late 20th and 21st centuries.
Contact was not made with Delphine until the Universal translator was remodified for aquatic brain patterns, after the Whale Probe encounter and it was discovered that Terran aquatic mammals were indeed sentient and intelligent.
All Delphine have the innate ability of sensing even the slightest movement, even in spite of intertial dampeners. This skill has made Delphine Navigators highly sought after in the Federation, leading to Cetacean Ops being a vital component of any Starship large enough.
Mobility Concerns
Delphines have been genetically modified to survive out of water, however, the preference of over 99% of the species is to remain in the water. When required to move about in non-Aquatic environments, Delphine Engineers designed an Water Sled. Basically this device encapsulated the user in a water bubble on top of an Anti-Grav unit.
